“Harnessing Bandwidth with Multipath TCP: From Theory to Implementation”

Speaker: Anwar Walid
Head, Mathematics of Systems Research Department
Nokia Bell Labs

Abstract: Multipath TCP (MPTCP), an emerging internet standard, has the potential to significantly improve user/application performance by seamlessly taking advantage of the increasingly available wireless capacity (e.g. WiFi, LTE, etc) for smart devices, and multiple network paths in the internet and datacenters.  The flexibility enabled by MPTCP in pooling network resources to support data-intensive and delay-sensitive applications, or selecting resource to optimize cost and energy, are capabilities not supported by existing TCP/IP internet protocol. In this talk we describe our recent research on MPTCP congestion control which spans theory, systems design and open-source implementation. We describe our “Balia” congestion control algorithm, a key feature of the official MPTCP Linux Kernel implementation which has been downloaded by thousands of users and developers, and review the theory behind its design that enables it to optimize performance tradeoffs. We highlight applications in wireless 5G, data centers and Software-Defined Networking (SDN). Initial deployment experiences and ongoing research directions will be also discussed.
