Abstract: IBM defines the next era of computing as Cognitive. This era, driven by big data and powered by advancing technologies, will transform the way we work and solve problems. This seminar will explore the power of cognitive computing, as well as, the skills and responsibilities required to work with this technology.

Speaker bio: Kathy McGroddy-Goetz is the Vice President of Partnerships & Solutions for IBM Watson Health.  In this role, she has business and technical oversight over strategic partnerships and the associated solution portfolios, as well as managing the ongoing relationship with IBM Research around Healthcare and Life Sciences to foster continuing innovation for future commercialization.  She also leads the regulatory and compliance organization for Watson Health. 

She has spent much of her 23-year career at IBM innovating at the intersection of advanced technologies and new business models, with an emphasis on Healthcare and Life Sciences solutions.  She has led teams in research & development spanning hardware and software, as well as business development organizations focused on research commercialization, strategic partnerships, mergers & acquisitions.  She spent two years as Director of Corporate Technology leading IBM’s technology strategy and has significant expertise developing innovative medical imaging solutions leveraging advanced processing, analytics and cloud computing. She has formed many deep collaborations and business partnerships around the world as an IBM executive and played a critical role in the corporation’s launch of Watson Health, called a “moon shot” by CEO Ginni Rometty.

She earned a B.S. in physics from SUNY Binghamton and a Ph.D. in molecular biophysics from Cornell University where she studied protein-ligand      interactions using NMR spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations.  She holds 4 patents and is a frequent speaker at industry and technology conferences.

Dr. McGroddy-Goetz is also an avid runner and triathlete as well as a volunteer coach for middle school and adult running programs.  She co-founded the New Fairfield Track Club in 2006 and served as President and Treasurer for two years each.  She lives in Ridgefield, CT with her husband and children.
